Imagine having only a third of the medics you need in an emergency—welcome to the reality at Prahova County Ambulance Service. With just 18 doctors for a requirement of 54, and a critical shortage of paramedics and drivers, the service is stretched dangerously thin.
The Human Cost: Every day, an average of 300 emergency calls demand the attention of an overburdened staff. Medics juggle two shifts, while drivers and paramedics tackle up to three extra duties per month. Vacations? Those are negotiated fiercely, and even then, time off is scarce.
The struggle to maintain quality of care intensifies as recruitment efforts falter. Manager Madalin Ipatie admits, ‘We attempted three driver recruitment rounds last year with dismal outcomes, and the bureaucratic quagmire makes hiring medics even tougher.’
A Community at Stake: As new substations are planned for Plopeni and Busteni, hopes are pinned on quicker response times. Yet, without staff to fill these roles, will these plans ever materialize? With healthcare hanging in the balance, the challenge is more than logistical—it’s a call to action.
